If you love that crunchy tortilla shell with salsa, sautéed ground beef, veggies, and cheese, you have not eaten a real taco at all.

The Real McCoy of tacos

In Mexico, tacos are made of soft fresh corn tortilla with salsa. They often serve them in a Yucatan manner stuffed with seasoned shaved pork, beef, chicken or fish meat, and different spices. A true taco does not have cheddar cheese and lettuce.

There are Mexican restaurants in Springfield that serve authentic tacos if you really want to experience it. Some like their tacos spicy, while others like it mild.

Though up to this day the origin of taco is still unclear, a history teacher noted that the word taco was coined in the late 19th century. Today, there are taco recipes you can try, but it is advisable that you know what a true taco taste like.

Make your own true Mexican taco version

For your first true Mexican taco attempt, you may want to try preparing “Tacos de Matamoros,” which is simple to do and it is known to be a staple food in Mexico. In a large skillet, season the ground beef with chili spices, garlic powder, bell peppers, onion, and paprika.

Place the cooked ground meat on the tortilla. You may want to add some other spices to suit your taste. You may consider adding sour cream and white Mexican cheese for authenticity.

A true taco is very different from the usual tacos served in restaurants. Once you know what a real taco taste like, you may experiment other taco recipes.
